2/24 Meeting: Moving Forward and building on our success

Building upon our great and successful conference last November, we are reaching for bigger goals in 2009. We meet briefly today with students from both Brown and RISD discussing our plans for this year.

Steve's opening for the meeting.

We'll be setting up our Virtual Center, start planning for the 2009 Better World Conference and organizing our Workshop Series. For the Virtual Center, we are trying to build a online database and a collection of blogs to record student projects that are done in and out of the classroom. For the Conference we are looking for students to lead and make this conference your conference. It has been a great experience for the 8 students who were involved with it and have gotten the chance to hangout with the best of the best in the social design field. Finally, the workshop series is going to be an on going program to bring together students from both schools and the local Providence Community.

RISD: What We Do

This is "What We Do"ing at RISD. Justin Rosengatern, Aaron Perry-Zucker and I are working on a one day event on April 11th titled "What We Do". Very much like TED, we are looking to spread ideas, build community and a support system for students, faculty and staff at our school. Our goal is to bring together students from different majors and background to talk about what they are working on, hoping to inspire and bring publicity to their work. These short presentations would be recorded and archieve online.

Design Think Tank

Design Think Tank is a project that has been conceive before TED, and slowly starting to take shape through the guidance of firms and individuals from TED and my local community.

Aaron Perry-Zucker and I are starting a design and business consultancy in Providence, Rhode Island. Our mission is to partner with firms and non-profits that are bettering the world, to use design as a tool to better serve their needs and the needs for those whom they serve.

Elizabeth Gilbert's TED talk at Long Beach

The talks given at TED Long Beach the past week and popping up online at TED.com. Elizabeth Gilbert is the author of the best-seller Eat, Pray, Love. She spoke about distinguishing creativity and the individual. I personally think that this was one of the most inspiring talks at TED, and especially as a creative individual, because she gave me a reason why I shouldn't stress out when I get artist/designer block.

TED is generous: WHAT THE #$%^@! ARE YOU SERIOUS?

Here are all the gifts I got at TED... A LOT!

3 Life Lessons learnt from TED's bathroom

1. Never start a conversation while in the bathroom next to someone you don't know at the urinal, and please don't extend you hand to offer a handshake.

2. Money does not equal to power: A story from our dear Afdhel who saw Bill Gates, one of the richest man on this planet, standing in line to wait to use the bathroom. Now thats the TED spirit.

3. Please wash you hands, imagine the bacteria you'll pass on at TED when you go around and shake everyone's hands.
